Holland’s History

In 1986, Holland Construction Services began with the singular vision to build a company based on the power of long-lasting relationships. Since that time, we have grown and expanded, while never losing sight of our true point of difference: our uncompromising commitment to integrity.

1986

May 16, 1986, Jim Riess and Mary Jo Jacob join Bruce & Gloria Holland in grand opening at 10 Executive Woods in Swansea. 

In first 15 months, Holland is awarded contracts for more than $18M in construction.

1987

First project completed: Dew’s Frozen Fantacy Custard in Fairview Heights.

Holland begins long relationship in serving banks (1987), retailers (1988), and auto dealers (1989).

1988

Dave Birk joins Holland as a Field Project Administrator.

Holland opens new office at 4495 North Illinois in Swansea.

Holland completes largest project to date: Schnucks Swansea Plaza for $5.2M. 

1989

Mel Benhoff joins Holland as a Field Superintendent. 

First Klondike Klassic raises $4,250 for SWIL Special Olympics.

1996

Holland launches Construction Management Services.

Holland completes first school project: Signal Hill Grade School addition for $3.9M.

Holland surpasses $25M in annual revenue.

1997

Mike Marchal joins Holland as a project Manager.

2001

Holland completes largest project to date: Illinois Distributing Co. for $8.9M.

2002

Dave Birk is promoted to VP of Construction Operations.

Holland completes the Gateway Grizzlies Baseball Stadium for $6.7M.

Holland surpasses $50M in annual revenue.

2003

Holland completes largest project to date: Liberty Middle School in Edwardsville for $19.8M.

2005

Dave Birk is promoted to Executive Vice President.

Mike Marchal is promoted to Director of Operations.

Mel Benhoff is promoted to newly created position of General Superintendent.

2007

Holland completes largest religious project to date: Holy Trinity Catholic Church & School for $14M.

Holland completes largest recreational project to date: Southern Illinois Miners Ballpark for $15M.

Holland surpasses $75M in annual revenue.

2008

Mike Marchal is promoted to VP of Construction Operations.

2009

Holland completes largest project to date: O’Fallon Township High School Milburn Campus & Auditorium for $32.6M.

2010

Holland wins Star Building Systems Master Builder of the Year for Eckert’s Country Market.

Holland completes largest project to date: SIU Saluki Way in Carbondale for $60M (joint venture).

2011

Management restructure: Bruce as CEO, Mike as President, and Dave as Executive VP & COO.

Holland completes two $29M multi-family complexes. Parkway Lakeside Apartment Homes in O’Fallon and Villas at Crystal Lake in Swansea, launching Holland into the multi-family market.

Holland completes largest healthcare project to date: Memorial Hospital’s Orthopedic & Neurosciences Center for $16M.

2014

Holland completes first multi-family project in St. Louis: Cortona at Forest Park for $32M.

2015

The Holland Employee Charitable Foundation (HECF) is created.

Holland completes largest project to date: Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh for $82M (joint venture).

Holland surpasses $125M in annual revenue.

2017

Holland completes first Ohio project for Spectrum Senior Living.

Memorial Hospital East wins St. Louis Business Journal’s Building St. Louis Award.

Holland completes largest project to date: HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for $137.6M (joint venture).

2018

Doug Weber is promoted to Vice President.

Holland ranks in Top 10 of small firms in St. Louis Business Journal’s Corporate Philanthropy list.

2021

Original employees Dave Birk (1988), Jim Riess (1986), Mel Benhoff (1989) and Mary Jo Jacob (1986) retire.

Holland celebrate 5-year anniversary of no lost time accidents.

Holland surpasses $400M in cumulative revenue in both the Multi-Family and K-12 markets.

2022

Bruce Holland receives his 60-year pin from the Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council.

2023

Holland opens it’s new St. Louis office at 1000 Macklind.

Holland is named 3rd Largest General Contractor in St. Louis.

Holland is named one of the “Best Places to Work” by the St. Louis Business Journal.

2024

Holland’s work at the MidAmerica St. Louis Airport Terminal Expansion Project is nominated for an AGC of Missouri Keystone Award.
