Jon’s Journey: A Tribute to a True Friend, Mentor, and Family Man
Jon Kribs was more than just a VDC Engineer at Holland—he was a presence that brought joy, wisdom, and humor to everyone he encountered. His passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy continues to inspire and shape the culture at Holland.
As part of this enduring legacy, Jon’s family is the beneficiary of the annual Klondike Klassic, a charity golf tournament hosted by Holland Construction Services. This event serves as a way for colleagues, friends, and the broader community to honor Jon’s memory while raising funds to support his loved ones.
The Man Behind the Smile
Jon’s journey began at Holland Construction Services in 2019, and it didn’t take long for his colleagues to recognize his unique personality and work ethic. Whether he was tackling complex project details or cracking jokes to lighten the mood, Jon stood out. One colleague recalled his first encounter with Jon during an Architecture project: “I received an RFI titled ‘Mailbox Wall O’ Fun.’ I laughed out loud—Jon had a way of making even the mundane seem entertaining.”
Jon’s humor was a constant throughout his time at Holland, and it’s something that everyone who worked with him remembers. “Jon was wicked smart, a creative problem solver, and always found a way to insert humor into any situation,” said one of his colleagues. “No matter how tense things got, Jon’s sarcasm and quick wit kept the mood light.”
A Heart for People
Jon’s impact wasn’t just about the work he did—it was the way he made people feel. He had an extraordinary ability to connect with others, whether he was helping a colleague solve a problem, sharing his love for nature, or simply asking about someone’s day. His colleagues fondly recall the way Jon made everyone feel at ease. “He said hi to everyone and was always looking for common ground. He knew how to listen, and even when the conversation was difficult, Jon’s ability to keep things light-hearted was unmatched.”
One colleague remembers a memorable hike with the VDC team, where Jon’s ability to connect with others shone through. “It was a great day to get out and connect on a personal level, and Jon was the life of the group. He made everyone feel welcome and relaxed.”
Facing Life’s Challenges with Grace and Humor
When Jon was diagnosed with cancer, he approached the diagnosis with the same positivity, humor, and determination that characterized his life. Though the news was devastating, Jon’s strength and grace in the face of adversity were a source of inspiration for everyone around him.
“He never let the cancer journey affect his attitude or humor,” said a close colleague. “Jon continued to work as much as he could and remained dedicated to his team, even when he wasn’t feeling his best. He never wanted anyone to feel sorry for him. His focus was always on others—his family, his colleagues, and the work at hand.”
Jon’s ability to maintain a positive outlook despite his illness was nothing short of remarkable. “He was worried about letting down the team more than he was about his own health,” one colleague shared. “Even when he was facing a bleak prognosis, Jon’s thoughts were always about how he could help others. That was just who he was.”
A Family Man Above All
While Jon was known for his brilliant work ethic and technical expertise, it was his devotion to his family that truly defined him. His colleagues often recall how he would light up when talking about his wife, Emily, and their daughters. Whether it was a camping trip, a fishing expedition, or a vacation to Florida, Jon was a passionate advocate for making memories with his loved ones.
One colleague shared, “Jon often talked about the adventures he and his family went on, from hikes to camping trips. He spoke about how his dad had visited all 50 states, and how he hoped to follow in those footsteps. He always gave Emily the credit for planning these adventures, and it was clear that his family was his greatest priority.”
Even as he fought cancer, Jon continued to cherish these moments. “They went on a trip to Florida while he was going through treatment. It was clear that, even in the face of illness, Jon was making sure to create new memories with his family.”
Jon’s Legacy: Humor, Courage, and Positivity
Jon’s legacy continues to live on in the work culture at Holland Construction Services. He influenced not only the way his colleagues approached their work but also how they approached life. “Jon was a no-drama kind of guy. He kept things positive, and he always found a way to make everyone laugh,” said a colleague. “He taught me that life is short, and the best thing we can do is stay positive and keep a sense of humor, even when things are tough.”
Jon’s influence extended far beyond his technical contributions. “His ability to deescalate tense situations with humor, his refusal to complain even when things were tough, and his unwavering dedication to his family—all of these things are qualities I try to carry with me every day,” said another co-worker.
Honoring Jon’s Memory
Jon’s passing was a profound loss, but his spirit lives on. The 2025 Klondike Klassic will be a special way to honor his memory while supporting his family. Whether it’s through a shared laugh or a moment of reflection, Jon’s impact continues to inspire those who knew him.
In the words of one colleague, “Jon’s courage, humor, and positivity during the darkest of days are an inspiration I will never forget. May we forever have Hawaiian Shirt Fridays in honor of Jon.”
As the Holland Construction Services team continues to support Jon’s family through the Klondike Klassic, they do so with the same commitment and camaraderie that Jon brought to every project, every challenge, and every moment of his life. His influence and spirit will continue to shape the culture at Holland Construction for years to come.
Rest in peace, Jon. You’ll never be forgotten.
